  1. you might try using a LIGHT or medium light action 6 1/2 to 7′ rod, with a fairly light reel

  2. you could try using okuma spinning rod medium size with a metal reel…(no plastic0 hope it helped!)

  3. Well, I’d definitely get a sensitive rod. Typically, Sauger don’t get much bigger than 6-8LB’s, (and thats a HUGE one!) with 1-3LBers the most common.

    What’s your budget?

If your like me, and your budget is around $150 – $200 I’d suggest you get these:

    1. Cabelas, Mag-Touch- (Great rod with excellent sensitivity. Get the longest one-piece model in Medium action.)- http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fishing-Rods/Spinning-Rods|/pc/104793480/c/104764680/sc/104836680/Cabelas-MagTouch174-Spinning-Rods/703550.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-fishing-rods-spinning-rods%2F_%2FN-1102841%2B10005237%2FNe-10005237%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104836680%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104764680%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104764680%3Bcat104836680#BVRRWidgetID

That’s my 2 cents. Please read the reviews given.

I’d also suggest you use Power Pro, (green) 4/15 braided line with a 14″ – 20″ 6 – 8 LB Fluorocarbon leader. I’ve done VERY well marrying braid, (which has NO stretch, is very strong and is extremely sensitive) with Fluro, (which is very abrasion resistant and “invisible” under water).

    Hope this helps?
