can I use closed face reels for saltwater fishing?

I went out and bought a closed face reel because the man at the shop said that closed face reels are for fresh water fishing and open face reels are for saltwater fishing. Is this true?

  1. I don’t think it matters. Its up to the buyer on which one they want. Open and closed both have their advantages and disadvantages

  2. No. Although the closed reels are usually on the small side. A large, spin cast like a zebco 888 is fine for salt and we use them for 20-30lb redfish with 20# test.
You will find spin cast made with materials specifically for salt.
