Is it a good idea to use my spinning reel for ice fishing?

I have a Pflueger president that holds 8 lb. test. Is it okay to use it for ice fishing or should I just buy a different reel?

  1. Why would you need to purchase a whole ‘nother reel?

It’ll work fine as long as you match it to the right ice fishing rod. Make sure its rated for 8 pound line.

  2. That is a great idea. I use the same reels I summer fish with on my ice rods.

  3. That reel will work fine for walleyes and pike. If you are after crappies or panfish, you’ll want an ultralight setup with no more than 4# test line.

  4. yeah, that’ll work. try 3ft. of 2lb. or 3lb. test leader for panfish. use a sponge bobber or spring bobber
