My neighbor just gave me a penn 310 gti levelwind reel. What should I use this reel for? I put 50 pound braid on it for shark and tarpon on the beach and bottom fishing for grouper offshore. Has anyone used one? If so, could you tell me what you used it for? How well it performed? Thanks!

  1. It’s made for bottom fishing and trolling. I’ve never used a conventional reel with a levelwind because it affects the casting, but I suspect it’s roughly the same as other Penn reels, meaning that if it’s in good shape (smooth drag, etc.) it’s fine for most fishing situations. It’s got a good gear ratio (unlike some old Penns), so it seems fine to me. It’s listed for 15 pound line, which might mean that you’re overloading it with 50, but based on my experience with other Penns, it ought to be fine for pulling with up to 30 pound line.

The Penn blurb (see link below) says this reel is good for anything, but of course, that’s Penn trying to sell its own product.

  2. 15 or 20lb line trolling for trout and salmon in the great lakes. otherwise, l look at this reel as l think peter really wanted to say… give it to someone else.

several years ago, l used to do a lot of reel repairs for one of our socal landings. for some reason, they got this wild hair to buy a bunch of penn level winds to use as rentals. BIIIG mistake. they didn’t even last the season. at the same time, we had 10 year old penn 155s and even some 5 year old kencor reels still working.

sure, you aren’t using yours as a rental but l just thought l’d give you some personal experience guidelines.

get a jigmaster 500. especially an older one, still made here. or a 113H.
