What is the best size spinning reel for a 7 foot Ugly stick fishing pole used for saltwater fishing?

I am planning on purchasing a 7 foot Ugly Stick for saltwater fishing. The pole says 20-40 pound line weight. I am planning on catching grouper, sand perch, snapper, etc. What would be the best size spinning reel for this pole? What size line should I be using?

  1. I own a large number of Ugly Sticks. I always stay to the low-middle end of line rating (fish are line shy) – so 25-30ish pd monofilament for your rod .

You could spend up to $900 for a Van Staal, but my personal preference would be the Japanese Okuma Epixor EF-80B. It’s a good quality reel at a decent price (own several myself). This reel holds 350yds/20lb or 250 yards/30lb. 4.8 to 1 gear ratio and should be very well balanced with an extremely smooth drag for 20-40 pound rated line. It’s Cabela’s Item number IK-125043.
