I am right handed and the reel has always been on my left hand side. I always knew this to be correct, at least I thought this to be correct.
A few years ago on a charter fishing trip in Lake Michigan, all of the spinning reels were set up with the handle on the right hand side of the reel. The guide told us that we’d been doing it wrong for years. Is he correct or foolish? Or is there no correct answer?
So,
1. Are you left or right handed?
2. What side is your handle on?
Thanks!

Some reels have slots on both sides that enable switching handle positions. Traditionally with a basic reel it should hang from the rod with the handle on the left. If his reels were hanging and the handle on the right they were ambidextrous. If they were sitting on top of the rod they were rigged incorrectly. I’m right handed.
Like John said, most can be switched from left to right.Left if you’re right handed, right if you’re left handed.I don’t quite understand why bait casters are the opposite
There is no right or wrong in this situation, you do what ever feels comfortable ! I’m right handed and I use a reel with the handle on the left side, because I have more control with the rod with my strong arm
I am right handed and the handle on all of my spinning reels is on the left side. There really is no correct answer, it’s whatever feels most comfortable. I, however, prefer casting with my dominate hand.
Left handed
Handle on right side.
I don’t think there is any right or wrong side to use the handle on. I’m right handed and have my handle on the right side. But I know a lot of right handed people that use their handle on the left side. It’s all personal preference really.
Just do what you’re comfortable with.
Im right handed and my handle is on the left side but my wife is also right handed but prefers her handle on the right side. Like everyone else said there is no wrong way as long as your comfortable. By the way did that guide have his left shoe on his right foot, we might have been doing that wrong for years also.
My spinning action is on my left side i reel with my left hand cast with my right there is no right or wrong way to fish with a reel on the sides when i first got into fly fishing they asked what way do i cast with it was my right hand so i reel with my left hand where if i cast with my left hand i would have had to reel with my right hand. With trout fishing i used to cast with my right hand then switch my rod to my left hand and reel with my right that was taking alot of time so i switched my reel to the left hand and now i cast and as soon as my spinner hits the water i can start reeling where there is no time lapse and or let it hit the bottom and stay for a while. so i would say he is foolish because with underspin reels their is no right or wrong way its what your preference is now any other reel like bait casters i have no clue on nor any experience on but with fly and underspin trigger and spinning reels it dosent matter i hope this helps
Right handed my handle is on the left. There is no right or wrong way on good reels you can choose which side you want the handle. Some multiplier reels have handles on the right and cannot be changed. The guide was a complete idiot.
Both me and my wife are right handed, but mine is on the left and her’s is on the right. We both find it hard if we have to switch and reel in a fish.
its for which ever is more comfortable. that guide was probly yanking your leg, im right handed an i keep the handle on the left.
There’s no correct way, however the majority of serious fisherman that are right-handed reel with their left-hand on spinning reels, and vice verse for left-handed fishermen.
I’m right handed and use five different poles and all the handles are on the right. There is no correct answer.
